On May 6 th , a building collapsed on Avenue P and East 5 th Street, after an out-of-control vehicle slammed into it. The incident prompted a massive response from Hatzolah, FDNY, and NYPD. After an extensive search, it appeared that there was no one trapped in the rubble. The first floor of the building, a former convenience store, was vacant. Five residents who lived on the building’s second floor were not home at the time of the collapse. The upper floor also houses a real estate office, which was closed for the night. The 20-year-old driver, Andrew Baird, of Brooklyn, got out of car and tried to run away on foot. He was apprehended nearby, thanks to volunteers from Flatbush Shomrim, who quickly canvassed the area. They were assisted by Boro Park Shomrim as well. Baird was held on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of the accident. He allegedly had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. There are also reports that a passenger may have run away from the scene. After a long layover between the Passover break and a very wet month of May, MSB is primed and ready to kick off the second half of the season. On May 9 th MSB introduced a new league feature, the “Thursday Night Showdown" between The Mighty Ducks and Cobra Kai at Coyle Street. Going into the matchup both teams were desperate for wins, trying to improve their 1-3 records respectively. The night lived up to the billing and did not disappoint. With a capacity crowd on hand and a cool chill in the air with playoff aspirations for bothof these talentedsquads, there was a playoff-type atmosphere. Game One was scoreless going into the 6 th , as reigning CY Young award winner Yaakov Seruya was blanking the Ray Esses-led Cobra Kai squad. Matching him inning by inning was the promising Eddie Harari, until rookie Lawrence Kurtz broke a scoreless tie with a bases-clearing triple to right, and the Ducks went on to win an important Game One. With their backs against the wall and the season potentially on the line, Cobra Kai gutted out an intense 7-6 victory in a game that featured spectacular defensive plays around the diamond, highlighted by young first baseman of the Ducks Joe Gindi and the Richter brothers (Marc and Albert) of Cobra Kai. The league is extremely excited about incorporating night games into the season, and is exploring the idea of making this a weekly addition.
