98 COMMUNITY MAGAZINE Peleh the BoyWonder HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED… HOWMANY BONES are there in the HUMAN BODY? T he skeletal system in an adult human body is made up of 206 bones. Although at birth a baby has over 300 bones, as the baby matures, some of the bones grow together and fuse into larger bones, leaving adults with only 206 bones. The 206 bones are divided into two main categories: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton consists of eighty bones that run down the center of the body and protect the heart and lungs. The skull, ribs, and backbone are included among these bones. The appendicular skeleton consists of the bones of the appendages (arms and legs) and the girdles (shoulder and pelvic). These body parts connect with the axial skeleton and move the body. The amount of bones in the hands (54) and the feet (52) are more than half the number of bones in the human skeletal system.
