GRACE OHAYON F or over 40 years, Sephardic Bikur Holim has been a source of strength for community members during times of need. With its many divisions, SBH is able to help with food, medical assistance for both physical and mental health issues, and so much more. This year, the SBH Tawil Family Jersey Branch has partnered with Fulfill, the Monmouth County food bank, to expand the food bank’s services by growing a vegetable garden and hosting a seasonal Farmers Market. The head volunteer for these projects, Elana Edery, is working with Jess Sinkhorn, Garden Coordinator at Fulfill, in planning the vegetable garden. Elana has also teamed up with Robin Gardiner to organize the Farmers Market. Thegoal of theseprograms is to increase theamount of food in the pantry, while also raising awareness about the food pantry. The food distributed at the Farmers Market is completely free to all who attend. The garden will be a volunteer-run program, and all of the produce grown will be placed in the pantry. This will provide the pantry with more healthy, fresh vegetables. The planting of the first crops is scheduled for Thursday, May 9th. Community members will benefit from this exciting new program in the near future. The garden has already involved a number of hesed- minded participants. The garden was completely built by volunteers! A group of high school students from Ma’or Yeshivah eagerly participated in this community project, and grabbed shovels and drills to build two garden beds. They also dug a trench around the garden. In addition to the hesed that the boys performed, they also gained skills needed to build a garden. Many of the boys picked up a shovel for the first time in their lives! SBH Tawil Family Jersey Branch Grows A Vegetable Garden! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SBH is looking for volunteers to help with tasks such as weeding, watering, and picking the produce.
