B rooklyn Allstate Agent Joey Sasson provides fellow community members with the following tips on why tenants should have a Renter’s policy: Personal Property Coverage: If your belongings are stolen or destroyed by a fire, theft, or another covered peril, your personal belongings should be covered. This includes clothing, furniture, and electronics. For expensive items, you may want to add scheduled personal property coverage. Scheduled Personal Property: This will cover your high-priced personal belongings beyond the limits of what your personal property coverage will pay. You can add this to your policy to help cover expensive jewelry or other pricy items you may own. Reimbursed Living Expenses: Helps with paying for increased living costs if a covered loss makes your home uninhabitable. This typically includes food and a temporary place to live. Joey Sasson There is a lot worth protecting within the walls of an apartment, and if there is a fire or theft, Landlord’s insurance may not cover your tenant’s possessions. Getting to know what is included in a Renter’s insurance policy will help you make the best choice for your situation. Why Landlords Should Have Their Tenants Buy Renter’s Insurance Liability Coverage: Covers legal expenses, medical bills, and other damages if someone is injured at your apartment and decides to take legal action. Guest Medical Coverage: If someone is injured in or around your apartment, this will cover reasonable and necessary medical expenses such as X-rays or an ambulance. Identity Restoration Coverage: If you become a victim of identity theft, you will have a fraud specialist to help. Other policies to consider are Flood Insurance and Personal Umbrella Insurance. FEMA says that floods are the number one natural disaster in the United States. A Landlord’s policy may have the building covered, but not the contents inside. Personal Umbrella insurance will provide extra liability coverage if your lifestyle exposes you to higher risks. 88 Community Magazine
