36 COMMUNITY MAGAZINE DEAL YMSL SOFTBALL LEAGUE ENDS 42nd SEASON IN DRAMATIC FASHION O n Sunday, July 16th, in an epic five-game series against the Cyclones, N.W.O. was crowned as the 42nd championship team of the Deal/YMSL Softball League. The series was held on a gorgeous, sunny day before a crowd of almost 200 people, including Hall of Famers Eddie Beda, Bobby Kassin, Stevie Shalom, and Nathan Tawil. Former legendary players Abie C. Serouya and David "Hurdle" Tawil were also in attendance. The crowd enjoyed a legendary pitching matchup between aces Abie Cohen and Nathan Betesh as the two teams battled it out. N.W.O. won the first game in dramatic fashion as second-year star Steven Chalouh threw out rookie Elliot S. Tawil at the plate to end the game and preserve the 5-4 victory. The catcher, Lewis Betesh, ironically played on the first Deal Softball League championship team, Jaws, in 1976. The Cyclones rebounded to win game two by a score of 7-4, thanks to a clutch performance from Captain Lee Zekaria and brilliant defense from David ‘DK’ Kassin and Jackie ‘JT’ Tawil. Game three went to N.W.O., who won by a lopsided 22-2 score; they jumped on Abie Cohen early and never let up, as they took a 2-1 series lead going into the final weekend of the season. The Cyclones evened the series at 2-2 with a 4-1 victory in game four. In that game, stellar pitching by Abie Cohen along with brilliant defense was the difference. The Cyclones defense gunned out three runners at the plate in the first two innings! Game 5 The stage was set for the game five showdown between Abie Cohen and Nathan Betesh, two future Hall of Fame pitchers. Ultimately, Nathan "Naybe" Betesh proved toomuch for the Cyclones as he tossed a two-hit shutout in the 3-0 championship victory. Other members of the N.W.O. team include Captain Max Sutton, VictorD. Dweck, StevenChalouh, Stephen Betesh, Eli Harari, Ikey S. Betesh, Elliot Saka, Rookie of The Year Joe Greenberg, and rookie sensations Moe Maleh and Albert Zalta. The Future Looks Bright With the development of DSN and the initiation of great high school sports programs at Hillel, Magen David, Flatbush, and YDE, the YMSL anticipates serving the community as a premier organization for many more years to come.
