Shaatra DOES IT With Shavuot just around the corner, you’re most probably whipping up (or – shhhhhh! – purchasing) a tantalizingly delicious cheesecake. Why not spread your wings a bit in the cheesecake toppings department and veer away from the same old canned cherries and blueberries? Try these lip-smacking and gorgeous caramel-themed options, and don’t tell anyone how easy they are to arrange. * Cut Viennese crunch and mini caramel chocolate bars into small chunks (about four each). Mix and spread in an even layer across the cheesecake. * Using a cheese grater, shave a black ‘n’ white Swiss chocolate bar and scatter the “shavings” across the top. * Mix caramel and shredded coconut until the white stuff is well coated and spread. * Crush Oreo cookies and drizzle with a confectioner’s sugar glaze for a tantalizing effect. All of these over-the-top toppings will stick beautifully if you first spread the cheesecake with a thin layer of caramel. MIRIAM SASSON You know how it goes: You’ve just consumed a wonderful Shabbat meal, leaving you anything but hungry. Just when you believe you cannot fit another morsel of food in your mouth, out comes the dessert: cakes, cookies, and the works. Perhaps the most addicting postscript to a meal, however, is the bowl of nuts. Over a good conversation, you mechanically move hand to mouth, hand to mouth, crunching on those nuts. That is, until you dip your hand in the bowl, only to come up empty! That’s when you realize you fell prey to the snack again. There’s no getting around it: nuts are fattening. That’s the only drawback to an otherwise healthy nosh. After all, nuts are a great source of protein, potassium, iron and vitamin E. But if you’re calorie counting, bear in mind that the fat content in nuts ranges from a whopping 70 to 90 percent (with macadamia nuts coming in first place)... Now that’s nuts! 80% by the Number Thought you were tight for space? Think again! Item of the Month What can I do to eliminate a sugar rush or sweet craving that comes over me? Like a fly buzzing in your ear, a sugar rush can be quite persistent. Sometimes it is difficult to squelch the urge to indulge in a sweet treat. What to do, then? For starters, drinking water should do the trick. But if the craving seems like it isn’t going anywhere, you can dab a pinch of salt on your tongue. Salt gets your hypothalamus gland, (the part of you that produces saliva) going, and the saliva eliminates that get-me-sugar-NOW! feeling. How’s this for a misconception? The Baby Ruth candy bar was not named for the famous baseball player, Babe Ruth (although, ironically, it was a dream of his). The candy was actually named in honor of former President Grover Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth, born during his presidency. Incidentally, Babe Ruth took the matter to court, and… lost. Food forThought Forget about… haphazardly separating egg yolks from egg whites. So that awesome-looking recipe calls for egg whites only? When prepping that dish, (such as meringue), don’t allow even the minutest amount of yolk to creep in. Even the slightest trace of egg yolk found in the egg white will alter the results. A Q-tip, or the edge of a paper towel, will remove the unwanted yellow residue for a most delicious dish. (Source: 10,001 Food Facts, Chefs' Secrets & Household Hints by Dr. Myles H.
