&Jamileh batMazal Cohen a''h. RABBI DANIEL D. LEVY 8 MAY ADHESIVE BANDAGES BE APPLIED TO OR REMOVED FROM A WOUND ON SHABBAT? If one anticipates requiring Band-Aids on Shabbat, he should remove the waxed paper from the underside of the Band-Aids before Shabbat. Technically speaking, however, this is permitted on Shabbat when necessary ( Yalkut Yosef , Saka Edition, 328: 96,98). If possible, one should rinse all the blood from the surface of the wound before applying the bandage (so as not to “dye” the bandage with blood). When it is probable that the bandage will become infected and will need to be replaced on Shabbat, one may prepare before Shabbat a bandage with antiseptic lotion smeared on it, so that during Shabbat he can remove the infected bandage and replace it with the fresh one. He should ensure not to smear the creamwhile applying the bandage. When necessary, one may pull a bandage off the skin even if hairs might be removed in the process ( Yalkut Yosef , ibid, 101). 9 MAY ONE APPLY A “BUTTERFLY BANDAGE” ON SHABBAT? According to some poskim , closing a wound with a “butterfly” or Steri-strip is considered an act of sewing, which is prohibited on Shabbat. Therefore, in situations that are not life-threatening, it is preferable to ask a non-Jew to apply this sort of bandage. Other poskim , however, maintain that applying a “butterfly” bandage does not violate the prohibition of sewing. Therefore, if a non-Jew is not available to apply the bandage, and there is a pressing need to use specifically a “butterfly,” a Jew may apply it. If possible, he should do so with a shinui (in an unusual manner). (See Halachos of Refuah on Shabbos , p. 150.) 10 MAY ONE ALTER THE SIZE OF A GAUZE PAD TO COVER A WOUND? One may not cut gauze bandage or use adhesive tape on Shabbat. If one did not prepare cut pieces of gauze before Shabbat, he must wrap the entire roll of gauze around the wound area and then tuck the end of the roll under the bandage without tying a knot. If that will not hold, one may make a knot in the form of a bow or use a safety pin. TAMMUZ 5774 JULY 2014 67 12.99 LUNCH SPECIAL SIMPLE MATH. REFINED DINING. starter+main +dessert N ow that ads Up!
