&Jamileh batMazal Cohen a.h. 8 MAY ONE SLEEP ALONE IN A SUKKAH ON SUKKOT? The Nimukeh HaGrib commentary to the Rambam ( Hilchot Rotze’ah 12:4) writes that one should not sleep alone in a sukkah on Sukkot, because one must reside in a sukkah in a manner resembling his residence in his home, and people do not generally sleep at home alone. According to this opinion, if one is unable to find someone else to sleep with him in the sukkah , he is exempt from sleeping in the sukkah . Most halachic authorities, however, including the Gaon of Vilna, disagree, and allow sleeping alone in a sukkah . One who performs a mitzvah such as sleeping in the sukkah will not know from any harm. 9 IF ONE FALLS ASLEEP DURING A MEAL WITH BREAD, MUST HE RECITE A NEW BERACHAH WHEN HE WAKES UP AND RESUMES HIS MEAL? If one fell asleep during a meal unintentionally, then even if he slept for an hour, he does not recite a new berachah before eating, but should nevertheless wash his han ds without a berachah . If, however, one goes to sleep on a bed, he is considered to have interrupted his meal and must therefore wash his hands and repeat the berachah of hamotzi before resuming his meal ( Shulhan Aruch 186:7, Mishnah Berurah 48). According to some opinions, he should first recite birkat ha-mazon before washing and reciting a new berachah . All authorities agree that one should recite birkat ha-mazon before going to sleep during a meal. 10 IF ONE DOZES OFF AS HE RECITES THE SHEMA PRAYER, HAS HE FULFILLED HIS OBLIGATION? The Shulhan Aruch ( Orah Haim 63:5) writes that if a person is seen falling asleep he should be woken with any means necessary, such as by shaking him, even if this would cause him discomfort, so that he will be fully awake and alert when reciting the first pasuk of Shema . Most authorities maintain that he must be awake and alert for the verse of Baruch Shem kevod , as well. Technically, if one was alert for the first verse, he fulfills his obligation even if he was dozing during the rest of Shema , provided that he said all the words. However, the Mishnah Berurah adds that if one was sleeping soundly such that he would not be able to respond if his name was called, then he does not fulfill his obligation.
