Community Magazine March 2014

Sportsman The B.A.C., LLP of the Month Jack Dushey W hile many people were still in Brooklyn and Deal fighting off the rampage of snowstorms, there were still a few lucky folks that were battling the winds in sunny Aventura, Florida. The Intercession Golf Classic was in full form for the eighth straight year, with the tournament being held this year in the elegant Turnberry Isles Miami Country club. The Intercession Golf Classic originated in 2007 to benefit the David Mizrahi Scholarship Fund which assists parents with yeshivah tuition. In recent years, the tournament shared a portion of the proceeds with the Safra Synagogue. A highlight of the winter break, the tournament has seen many of the community’s superstar golfers, such as David Braka, Eli Gindi, Jack Hakim, Danny Massry, Ivor Braka and many others, pass through its doors. Being the only community with a hole-in-one winner, Richard “Dickie” Sutton, and with prize money of $25,000, the tournament is unique in its class. This year another name was added to the list of the community’s superstar golfers – Jack Dushey.Admired by his peers for his accuracy and fair play, Jack battled the strong winds and difficult course and shot a remarkable low net score of 73. Marty Cohen, who was also part of that incredible foursome of Jack, Marty, Dickie Sutton and Mitchell Gemal, was matching Jack stroke for stroke and also shot an outstanding 79. Of course, Jack is not only an excellent golfer. Far more importantly, he is one of the leaders in our community, standing at the forefront of many community events and charitable organizations. Honorable mention goes to Abe Franco, this year’s putting champion. Using his precision stoke, he surpassed the competition and came within inches of claiming the $5000 grand prize (which many were sure he would have donated back to the shul). Abe, a man whose name is synonymous with leadership and generosity, is a two-time President of Congregation Beth Torah and two-time President of The Safra synagogue in Aventura, Florida. He has served as an inspiring model of community service and goodwill for his family and our community. Abe enjoys the game of golf and plays it like a professional. It is truly an honor to pay tribute to these two great men for their remarkable contributions to our community – both on and off the greens. Congratulations Jack and Abe!
