Community Magazine May 2013
This month’s B.A.C., LLP Sportsman of the Month is… Nathan Tawil Nathan Tawil’s selection as Sportsman of the Month should come as no surprise to anyone involved in community sports. His celebrated accomplishments in the Deal/YMSL Softball league are nothing short of staggering – five championship titles, perennial all-star center fielder, batting title champion, and member of the Deal Softball Hall of Fame. The list of his athletic accomplishments on the field can go on and on – but space is limited, and besides, it really isn’t necessary. The real reason why Nathan has been named Sportsman of the Month is because of his remarkable talent and leadership qualities that he exudes off the field. A true, consummate professional, Nathan exemplifies sportsmanship in the highest degree. Although he is one of the top players in the game, he treats every player, whether he is a first-round pick or last- round pick, with the same amount of respect. Known for his humble, dignified, and quiet demeanor, Nathan always speaks through actions – not words. He is never one to boast, never one to argue, but always the first one to help others – teammates and opponents alike , both on and off the field. Nathan not only enjoys playing the game, but is also a huge fan and supporter of the Deal/YMSL League. One of the reasons is the league’s rich history and tradition. The Deal Softball league is much more than just another softball league. It was formed 36 years ago to allow fathers and sons to play together every Sunday. It has kept families and community members united and become part of the Sunday ritual for every family in the community. When Nathan broke in as a rookie, he had the opportunity toplay alongsidehis father, and now the opportunity has come full circle. Contemplating retirement, Nathan decided to continue playing this season so he would be able to play with his sons every Sunday and continue the league’s tradition. On opening day this season, Nathan was scheduled to start in left field, but he noticed there was a player on his team that was new to the league. Nathan wanted the 12th- round rookie to feel part of the team, so he chose to sit on the bench and allow the rookie to start in his place. Were his teammates surprised? Not really – it was yet another example of his selflessness and compassion. Once again – Nathan was teaching others through his actions rather with his words. We are very excited that Nathan decided to remain in the league, and we are proud to name him this month’s Sportsman of the Month. If you, or your league, would like to nominate a candidate who displays skill, sportsmanship, and community values that warrants recognition, simply send in the athlete’s name along with a photo and a brief summary, including statistics and accomplishments, to Sports@CommunityM.com. Athletes involved in any of our community’s sports leagues, events, tournaments, or other organized play are eligible. Please note that this honor is not necessarily awarded to the highest scorer or to the top rated player, but rather to the best all- around sportsman. A true sportsman is not interested in winning at all costs, but rather plays the game while demonstrating good values, teamwork, courteousness, self-discipline, and respect for all players.
