Do you know how to divide them among five kids so that each one has an apple and one apple stays in the basket? Last Month’s Junior Riddle: Midnight If it were two hours later, it would be half as long until midnight as it would be if it were an hour later. What time is it now? Solution: 9 p.m . Solved by: Victor Grazi, Rachel Cohen, Ezra Sasson, Daniel E. and Yael R. Dilamani a young man in an Armani suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the shepherd, “If I tell you exactly how many sheep you have in your flock, will you give me one?” The shepherd looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing flock and calmly answers, “Sure. Why not?” The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his AT&T cell phone, surfs to a NASA page on the internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with hundreds of complex formulas. He uploads all of this data via an email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and turns to the shepherd and says, “You have exactly 1586 sheep.” “That’s right,” the shepherd says. “Well, I guess you can take one of my sheep.” He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then the shepherd says to the young man, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my sheep? “ The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, “Okay, why not?” “You’re a consultant,” says the shepherd. “Wow! You’re right,” says the yuppie. “How did you guess that?” “No guessing required,” the shepherd answers. “You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked; and you don’t know a thing about my business.… Now give me back my dog.” Abe Cohen COURTEOUS SERVICE A customer was bothering the waiter in a restaurant. First, he asked that the air conditioning be turned up because he was too hot, then he asked it be turned down cause he was too cold, and so on, for about half an hour. Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, and walked back and forth without getting angry even once. Finally, a second customer asked him why he didn’t throw out the pest. “Oh, I really don’t care or mind,” said the waiter with a smile. “We don’t even have an air conditioner. “ Yitzy D. TOO MUCH TECHNOLOGY How do you know you’re living in the 21st Century? • When you try to enter your password on the microwave. • When you leave the house without your cell phone, you panic and turn around to go get it, even though you lived without it for the first 20 or 30 years of your life. • When you consider second day delivery too slow. • When you get up in morning and go online before getting coffee. • Even worse, when you wake up at 2am to get a drink and check your email on the way back to bed. When the bottom of all your emails says, “Sent from my wireless phone.” Sarah Dweck SEND YOUR SOLUTIONS! mobile: Scan the QR code at right online: go.CommunityM.com/riddle email: riddles@Community M .com facsimile: 718-504-4246 post: 1616 Ocean Pkwy, Brooklyn, NY 11223 “ Correct solutions received by the 20 th of each month will be noted in the next issue.
