YDE Juniors Visit NYU-Polytechnic Institute On March 13, 2013 a group of YDE juniors travelled to New York University Polytechnic Institute in downtown Brooklyn with their Director of College Guidance, Mrs. Eva Hefter, and Principal, Mr. Harvey Feldman, for a tour of the facilities and a hands-on laboratory experience. The students discovered the Polytechnic engineering equation of I2e, which stands for invention, innovation and entrepreneurship. They were shown that turning ideas into reality to improve our society, and leading to the businesses and careers of the future, is well within their grasp. The students were first addressed by an Admissions Officer at NYU-POLY, and learned about the entrance requirements to the college, and the extensive careers that are available to a Polytechnic graduate. Then, the YDE students went to the lab where they were challenged to create a Mousetrap Car, a vehicle powered by a mouse trap and string. The vehicle was to be designed and sketched by the students, and then built using Lego blocks and powered by the force of the mouse trap being released. The students were organized into five teams and challenged to compete among themselves to come up with a design that would power their vehicle to travel the furthest distance. Each team was allowed three trials to improve on their design before the final competition. The students were joined by two lab assistants from Polytechnic who explained, assisted and judged the competition. The students worked assiduously creating the design, gauging the aerodynamics of their model, building the vehicle and estimating the length of string needed to power the vehicle to travel the furthest it could without getting entangled. After two hours of intense collaborative work, the vehicles were sent off. Two teams tied for first place by building a vehicle that travelled 42 feet from start to finish. The winning team members were Bobby Matalon, Samuel Beyda and Jimmy Assis from one team, and Ikey Hidary, Ralph Cohen, and Michael Kassin from the other. The lab assistants complimented the YDE students, telling them they were the most intense, interested and persistent group from any high school that had participated in the contest.
