12 oz. and cost somewhat more than the 7 oz. ones your kids run through like water. You also get the most for your money by purchasing store brand products, which can be 30 percent (or more) cheaper than their name brand counterparts, and are nearly identical – often even manufactured in the same factory. While impulse buying is never a good idea, in a warehouse store it can mean double trouble, and a double take when you see the total cost. So write a list, and stick with it. Try to schedule your trips strategically, so you don’t end up having to go too often, especially with the cost of gas being so high. Depending on the size of your household, you may end up going monthly, or only four times a year. If you can’t fit it all in one wagon, many stores will allow you to put a wagon on the side and continue shopping. And hopefully help you to the car. Share the Wealth If you don’t have the storage space or need for such large quantities, find a Bulk Buddy – another person to split the goods with you, as well as the card fee. Or ask a neighbor or family member if they would like to divvy the treasure so you both get to save. Go over your list before you go, so you don’t get stuck with more than you need. Storage Solutions Some kitchen items are not properly sized for your cabinets, or aren’t airtight once opened. Proper storage is important if you want your industrial-sized items to last. For example, a 50 lb. bag of rice can be a great bargain, but without proper storage you’ll end up tossing most of the stash if it gets infested. Look for large plastic buckets with air-tight lids to help store opened items. Spices are also a good buy– but if you expect more than a year of shelf-life, store them in the freezer. Yeast should also be stored in a cool place once opened. If you need more storage space, consider installing some extra shelves in the unused space at the top of your closets to store the lightest, bulkiest items (paper towels, tissues). In the end, most families will find that with the right effort, planning and some savvy choices, bulk buying can be an economical and efficient way to make household shopping cheaper and more efficient.
