Women Gather for “A Day Of Dignity II” A special “ kinus hitorerut ,” a gathering to awaken us during the Aseret Yemei Teshuva (the Ten Days of Penitence between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), was held on September 15 th , in the main sanctuary of Shaare Zion for women and girls. The Day of Dignity seminars focus on the role of the Jewish woman as bat Melech , (daughter of the King). The series was launched as a call to women and girls in the community to be more aware to keep the beautiful missva of seniut (modesty). The timing of the event, before Yom Kippur, gave the speakers, Mrs. Naomi Sutton and Rebbissen Dina Fink, much to speak about to the large and appreciative audience. Mrs. Bonnie Mansour introduced Mrs. Sutton and also shared her own words of encouragement. She reminded the audience that Hashem sees our efforts to learn and grow, and helps us attain our goals. As such, nothing is ever beyond our reach. Mrs. Naomi Sutton described a video she had recently viewed. A young man complained to his rabbi that he was trying hard to change, but every year he seemed to remain in the same place. The rabbi told him that it takes a full five years for the Chinese bamboo to sprout, but once it does, it takes only another six weeks to become as tall as a building. The only difference between us and the bamboo is that the former is finite, whereas our potential is infinite. However, like the bamboo, we go step by step, and eventually we look at ourselves and see we have grown a considerable amount. But it doesn’t happen all at once. Rebbissen Fink relayed a thought from the Maharal about tipping the scales in our favor on the Days of Mercy and Judgment. One should show a sincere desire to do Hashem’s will by performing one missva in an extra special way. She stressed that seniut ha’isha , a woman’s modesty is of utmost importance; it is our protection. Rebbissen Fink told everyone that they should ask themselves before they buy an item of clothing, “Would I wear this in the Bet Hamikdash ?” She spoke about Hashem’s special closeness to us during the days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur, emphasizing that we need to just call out to him, “Our Father, our King.” Mrs. Terry Dwek is credited with initiating the campaign towards seniut observance. The Day of Dignity was sponsored as a zechut for all who need a refu ’ a shelema (complete recovery), particularly Rabbi Moshe ben Luna, Rabbi Aharon Chaim ben Leah, Meir ben Jamie, and Leah Lydia bat Alvera. – Pnina Souid
