50 Community magazine BB Q In Memory of Abe M. Cohen a.h. & Jack N. Mizrahi a.h. Photos by: Mark and Ricky Greenberg R icky and Jamie Cohen graciously opened their home on Thursday, August 19th, hosting a spectacular night of music, entertainment and dinner to benefit one of our community’s most worthy causes, the Sephardic Food Fund (SFF). Guests of all ages attended the fundraiser and enjoyed socializing while supporting a great cause. “It’s great that the community always finds ways to bring us together,” remarked Andy Mizrahi, “and the bonus is that it goes to charity.” Guests enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner while hypnotist, Ronnie Baras, entertained and amazed the crowd. An exciting Chinese Auction was displayed. as a community band, RJ2, delighted everyone with pop hits, moving many attendees to sway and sing along. But the fun and enjoyment did not distract from the purpose of the event – to support the SFF. Leaflets were distributed with anonymous letters written by past SFF recipients to Rabbi Sultan, thanking him for helping them get food on their table. Guests left the event with free frisbees emblazoned with the SFF motto, and with a more fulfilled heart for having helped change the lives of their fellow community members. “The SFF expresses its deepest thanks to Ricky and Jamie Cohen for opening their home,” said Jacky Schweky, “and to everyone who contributed to make it such an extraordinary night.” He also expressed appreciation to all who attended the event and donated to help feed our community. “It is with your support, that the SFF is able stay afloat,” he added. For years, the SFF has worked tirelessly to ensure that no family in our community is lacking the most basic necessity – food. Most of us take for granted that, thank Gd, we can eat to our heart’s content any time we like, but as many found out at the fundraiser, an alarming number of families in our own community don’t have enough food. And with the economic downturn, the situation has only worsened, as even more community families are now struggling to put food on the table. The SFF prides itself on keeping overhead to a minimum, with virtually every dollar raised going to feed the hungry.
