RECIPES: Homemade Dressing Rena Chehebar I t’s no secret that the dressing makes the salad and nothing beats a great homemade dressings for flavor and freshness. A tasty dressing is also highly versatile, easily transforming into a dip or a glaze on fish. HesHvan 5771 oCtoBeR 2010 45 M y work schedule doesn’t always allow me to be home. There’s always a note for each child and an after-school snack waiting for them. So there’s still a routine in place, even if I’m not there. T. T. O nce a child reaches about 9-10 years old, I found that he or she should be encouraged to take responsibility for their own homework. This is usually their first, independent responsibility and many important life skills can be learned. Ma a S . S ome homework, like reading is dependent on someone else being there to listen. If no one in the house can focus when my son is ready, I sometimes have him call grandpa. My son is always impressed by how well grandpa listens and they both enjoy the activity. S a B y Mediterranean Garlic Drizzle Ingredients: •1 bunch fresh parsley •1 cup olive oil •1/3 cut cider vinegar •1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced •2 tbsp. soy sauce Directions: 1. Trim the parsley stems and soak in salted water. Drain. 2. blend all ingredients in a food processor. 3. Store in a covered jar and refrigerate until use. Shake well before using. Smooth and Creamy White Ingredients: •6 heaping tbsp. mayonnaise •6 tbsp. lemon juice •2 tsp. sugar •1 tsp. salt •1 clove garlic •1 tsp. pepper •1 tsp. paprika •1 tsp. dried parsley flakes Directions: 1. blend all the ingredients together. 2. Keep refrigerated until served. Stays fresh for about one week. Rich Creamy Parsley Zest Ingredients: •1 clove garlic •1 medium onion •¼ cup fresh parsley •1 cup mayonnaise •1 tbsp. lemon juice •1 tbsp. vinegar •½ tsp. salt •½ tsp. fresh-ground black pepper •Variation: for a dairy meal add ½ cup sour cream Directions: 1. Grind garlic, onion, and parsley in food processor. 2. blend in by hand the mayonnaise, lemon juice, vinegar, salt, and pepper. 3. Chill at least one hour before serving. You’re Not Alone Of course, no system, parent or child is perfect. What worked for you as a child might not work for your kids. Your child might benefit from a combination of several learning styles. And if you can’t figure out what works on your own, just remember that there are plenty of lifeboats out there to reinforce, encourage and give parents new and old ways to make it work for them.
