Community Magazine November 2009

78 Community magazine MDY Hosts Kids of Courage This year, Shabbat Perashat Beresheet, marked more than the beginning of the weekly cycle of Torah readings for the Magen David Yeshiva (MDY) and Synagogue.Togetherwith the community at large, MDY hosted the first annual winter Shabbaton for Kids of Courage, an organization that offers trips and fun programs for very sick children and young adults throughout the year. Some 60 children and 70 volunteer staff members were hosted in homes throughout the community. Some hosts were called upon to set up oxygen, feeding pumps and ventilators to accommodate the guests. Medical staff members circulated among the homes day and night to care for the patients. The medical team was led by co-founders Dr. Stuart Ditchek and paramedic Howie Kafka along with critical care nurse Sara Miriam Kaplan and other medical personnel. Kids of Courage director and co-founder Ari Adlerstein, Program Director Ari Dobkin, Menashe Freidman, Raphi Bollag, Abie Abraham, Diana Haddad along with a great group of volunteers meticulously planned the programming for this Shabbaton. The yeshiva, synagogue and community members were invited to join in the fun for several parts of the program, including an Oneg Shabbat and community-hosted seuda shelisheet. The undertaking was huge, but the courage of the dedicated volunteers and children was even greater.
