Rabbi Holtzberg vividly recalls his conversation with the great sage, starting with a detailed description of the family’s plight. Immediately after he finished speaking, Hacham Ovadia picked up the telephone and called Dr. Shtesman, his personal physician who also served as general director of Israel Social Security. “Professor Shtesman,” the rabbi said, “it’s Ovadia speaking. I am sitting here with Ephraim Holtzberg who is working with an injured girl whom no institution is willing to accept. Please call Holtzberg immediately to set up a meeting so you can find an appropriate facil- ity for her.” Two days later, Rabbi Holtzberg met with Professor Shtesman, who arranged for Gila’s admittance to a fine institution in Tel Aviv. “With one phone call,” Rabbi Holtzberg observed, “Rav Ovadia solved a problem that the whole Israeli bureaucracy could not solve for fifteen years!” Immediately after his meeting with the Professor, Rabbi Holtzberg rushed to Shaarei Tzedek Hospital, where Gila’s father, Tzadok, lay nearly unconscious. The rabbi held his hand tightly and described in a loud voice – and in full view of the hospital staff – that a facility had been found for Gila. Suddenly, Tzadok grasped Rabbi Holtzberg’s hand, acknowledging that he heard what the rabbi said. That night, Tzadok regained consciousness and was visited by his family, enjoying their company and affection for the last day of his life. This story – which is just one of countless examples – exemplifies the devotion and tenacity that characterize Rabbi Holtzberg’s work. In today’s selfish, cynical world, he reminds us of the kind of people Am Yisrael are meant to be – and the kind of city Jerusalem is meant to be. Yeshayahu’s prophesy about the destiny of Jerusalem goes on to describe, “For the Law shall come forth from Zion, and the word of Gd from Jerusalem” (Yeshayahu 2:3). Perched high on Mount Zion over- looking the Temple Mount, The Simcha Hall broadcasts to the world the “wordofGd”– themessageof lovingkindness andselflessdevotion toall.
