82 Community magazine the international community Hamas Leader’s Son Condemns Terrorists The son of a founding mem- ber of Hamas in Ramallah and a rising figure within the ranks of the terrorist group, Mosab Hassan Yousef has since abandoned his family to speak out against the injustices he has witnessed from the inside. Now living in San Diego, California, Yousef described his previous life and the mindset of the people he left behind. At age 18 Yousef was arrested and spent a year in an Israeli prison, where he saw firsthand the cruelty with which the Hamas leaders among the Palestinian inmates, treated their own people. He began asking questions, and though Hamas leaders strongly discourage questioning the faith, Yousef used his computer to search for answers. “Nowadays,” he commented, “with knowledge so easily accessible, Muslims can learn about the world. Radical Islamic leaders are afraid of knowledge, so they keep the people ignorant.” After learning about the world and other religions, he felt the truth was elsewhere, and moved. Now, he recognizes that his life may be in danger because of his outspoken opposition towards his former comrades. Assessing the current situation, Yousef does not believe Hamas and Israel will ever coexist. “They are like fire and water,” he said, noting that Hamas’ Koran-based ideology does not allow for making peace with Israel, which would betray the very essence of their Islamist ideology. – CM S TAFF German Police Remove Israeli Flag German police broke into an apartment and removed Israeli flags in order to calm Muslim protesters demonstrat- ing against Israel in the town of Duisburg last month. The episode which was captured on film by the apartment owner, showed that the two large Israeli flags he placed in his third floor windows in response to the 10,000 people who demonstrated in support of Hamas, were removed by police amid cheers and applause from the mob.
