14 COMMUNITY MAGAZINE L E T T E R S The Eighth Way to $1k After implementing some of the ideas in your informative and well written article: 7 ways to save over $1000, I came upon another timely and potentially lucrative option that many of us can take advantage of to make good money. Many of us have gold jewelry we don’t – and probably never will – use. With the price of gold now at an all-time high, hovering at around $1,000 per ounce (as of mid-March), those useless trinkets could be turned into serious cash. The price of gold is four times what it was just eight years ago – so that $400 brace- let sitting in the jewelry box graveyard could be worth over $1000! Many local jewelry stores will melt down the jewelry and pay you for the gold content. Then, take the money and use the first piece of advice in the article – make your money work harder by putting it into a high-yield investment. R. Sultan Images of Evil Every month I look forward to receiv- ing your excellent magazine. The articles are interesting and informative. There is, however, one point that I feel a need to mention. [Last] month’s edition had in it pictures of Hitler y”sh and other evil peo- ple. It is said that one should not look at the face of a rasha (wicked man). I would like to ask that in the future you leave out such pictures. They do not belong in a quality magazine such as yours. N. Ani The K Question I was reading the article about the need for kosher supervision on different foods in a previous issue of Community and I was wondering if in your research you found the validity of the symbol “K” that is found on many foods? Are there any guidelines to the “K”, and if so who estab- lishes them? A. N Editor’s reply: The short answer is that a K is generally not a valid kosher symbol and there are no guidelines governing its use. But the situation can often be more complex, and therefore, we hope to cover this issue in a future investigative report. The Safe Side of Kashrut Firstly thank you for a superior monthly magazine; it has a little bit of everything and something for everyone. I even send a copy to Monsey every month so that my mother-in-law can enjoy it too (she espe- cially loves Rabbi Eli Mansour’s articles). In [the February] issue I was read- ing the list of products that need kosher supervision and I noticed that you listed paper towels as not needing a kosher symbol. This is true, however, I thought your readers would want to be aware that Bounty paper towels have an ingredient that [may be problematic] (as written by Rabbi Blumenkrantz zt”l). Since many people use paper towels with hot fried food, I think it’s important to bring this to your readers’ attention. Also, although lehalacha (according to the letter of the law) toothpaste and mouthwash do not need supervision, many contain [poten- tial] animal [derived] ingredients such as glycerin which can be made from animal, vegetable or synthetic [sources]. With so many kosher brands available it’s truly a shame to put something non-kosher into your mouth. Rabbi Blumenkrantz’s Pesach digest has a list of all the kosher national brands of toothpaste and mouthwash (there are many). Hatzlacha raba (best of luck) and keep up the great work!
