70 COMMUNITY MAGAZINE s xc 10 people will be lined up in a single straight line, all facing same direction. A hat, either black or white will be randomly placed on each of their heads. No one will be able to see the color of the hat they are wearing or the color of the hat of anyone behind them. The tenth person in line can see the nine people ahead of him and the color of their hats, the ninth person see the eight people and the color of their hats and so on, until the first person who can not see anyone. Beginning with the tenth in line and continuing to the ninth, eighth and so on, each person must call out the color of the hat they are wear- ing. They cannot move and have no way to see anything other than the people’s hats in front of them. The only thing each person is allowed to do is say “White” or “Black” without any other hint in their voice or tone. Knowing what they will have to do in advance, the 10 people take a few minutes to figure out a strategy. They come up with a solution that would allow each of the people to know what color hat they are wearing except for the tenth person who will have to take a guess. What is their plan?
