fashion flash I n the sometimes flaky, always fast paced world of fashion, there are some things that never go out of style; the monogrammed designer logo bag, the smart black pump, and our venerable winter favorite, the ever popular, tried and true tweed. Ever since the days a certain Ms. Coco Chanel began designing haute couture, richly textured, fibrous, multi colored boucle and tweed has been the epitome of pulled together elegance and class, and has evolved into the House of Chanel’s signature suit and style. But have no fear; you don’t need to break the bank or put up the airs of a stuffy socialite to echo this classic look. In fact, today’s tweeds are both timeless and trendy, hard edged and feminine, and come at prices that are both (relatively) reasonable and attractive. For a dressy look, head to toe tweed suits are the ultimate in ladylike. Or, pair a boucle jacket with a denim skirt and a strand of pearls for a trendy, downtown chic appeal. What’s even more modern about this old time favorite is the unexpected places we’re finding it: basic shoulder bags are perking up, shoes are kicking in some pretty detailing, and even hats are enjoying the quirky and fun updates of colorfully woven fibers. And traditionally tweed cloaked apparel are not being left in 1920 either. Jackets are being stylized with feminine details, like embroidery, floral adornments and soft and romantic hues, or jazzed up with trendy and mod plaid. Skirts are shaping up with ladylike shirring, godet pleating, and assymetrical hemlines. Looks like timeless tweed is truly here to stay!
