It is perhaps the most eagerly awaited season for fashion mavens and designers alike, as the introduction of the new fall and winter collections sets the forecast for the year’s mood. Sometimes, fall fashions are stern and aus- tere, with grayed wools and flannels cloaking the simple fun of dressing. I’m thanking my lucky stars this year’s collections are quite the contrary. In fact, you might as well grab your rainbow bright Pucci scarves and patent leather go go boots because we are in the midst of an all out retro revolution. The mod look of the 60’s was clearly the inspiration for the new fall clothing and accessories, with striking graphic and color block prints dominating clothing and even shoes. Dark and oversized sunglasses a la Jackie O (the queen of retro) have made a comeback, as well as necklaces and earrings that could very well double for mini disco balls. Color is alive and well, with flourescent hues spiking otherwise tame shoulder bags and boots. Clothing shapes are also mimicking fun and flashy mod fashions; the 60’s staple A-line shift dress and pea- coat is back, as well as the ankle length boot. The funny thing is, the term “mod” is short for modern, but these charming fashions couldn’t look more vintage, and we wouldn’t want them any other way.
