Developer Bruce Ratner has proposed building an arena for the New Jersey Nets in a development over an existing rail yard at Atlantic and Flatbush avenues in Brooklyn. The project would include 2.7 million feet of commercial space and a few thousand units of housing as well. To try to prevent the move from Jersey, billionaire Senator Jon Corzine, and Developer Charles Kushner are putting a bid together to buy the two-time Eastern Conference champs from YankeeNets, the partnership that owns the Yankees and the Nets, the New York Post reported. Crime Down in NYC – On the Rise Nationwide New York city is reporting that major crime over all has fallen 8 percent this year from the same period last year, and dropped in nearly every cat- egory. Reports of felony assaults have dropped 10.7 percent, according to administration figures, and shootings are down 10.3 percent. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, total violent crime and property crime reported to law enforcement agencies across the country during the first six months of last year increased by 1.3 percent compared with the same period in the previous year. *Garbage: Residents who are normally scheduled for collection on the day of a holiday should place their trash out at curbside on the holiday evening for collection. Some residents will experience a dis- ruption of on-time household collection service. Recycling : Residents who are normally scheduled for recycling col- lection on the day of the holiday will not receive service that week. They should place their recyclables out at curbside the following week on their regular day of service. ** For snow and other emergencies call 212 or 718 CALL DOT (225-5368) to get an update of parking rules for a particular day. 50 C OMMUNITY M AGAZINE Recycled News Plastic Recycling Resumed The City resumed its plastic recycling collection program citywide on July 1st. The designated plastic recyclables are: plastic bottles and jugs including beverage, milk, and juice cartons which can be placed in the same clear plastic bags or blue labeled containers as metal recyclables. All other plastics will be considered garbage. Paper should continue to be placed in clear plastic bags or in green labeled containers. Also, corrugated cardboard should continue to be flattened and tied. Summonses for failing to recycle metal and paper or mixing either of these two recyclables with garbage will still be written. However, summonses for failing to recycle plastic will not be issued until further notice. Glass recycling will resume in April 2004. Alternate Week Recycling Schedule As of July 28, New York City has transitioned to an alternate week recycling pickup schedule as part of the sweeping budget cuts enacted by the city. To find out what day your recycling will be picked up, find your location on the map.
