32 COMMUNITY MAGAZINE s ” xc Community Bowling Tournament Raises $30K For Israel Terror Victims B Y : R A L P H G I N D I W hen over 100 community members bowled their way into history on May 18th, in the first ever Community Charity Bowling Tournament for Israel, they got much more than they bargained for. Sponsored by Middlegate Mortgage, the event, contrived and organized by Jack Franco, proved to be a unique opportunity for fun and friendly competition while promoting a most worthy charity. The tourna- ment, which was held at Marc Lanes in Brooklyn, included a tasty catered lunch by Circa of Brooklyn and offered prizes by SDI, David Rudy Jewelers, Fontana Bella Restaurant, Wendy’s Plate, Mabat Steak House and Back to Nature Restaurant. The first place team led by star bowler Morris Beyda, included Morris Joe Benun, Hymie Shamah and Abie Goldschmidt. Beyda, who scored an impressive 226, also won the Most Valuable Player award—not bad for a guy who hardly bowls. In second place, was the team of Robert Shamah, Ike Saff, Morris Hidary and Charlie Anteby. All members of the first and second place teams received impressive trophies as well as a selection of various prizes. Whether they walked away with a trophy or not, it was a fun filled day for everyone who attended and more importantly was the wor- thy cause–helping our brothers and sisters in Israel. Between the contributions of the event’s gener- ous sponsors and players, over $30,000 was raised. most of which went directly to the terror victims and families. Assisting in the col- lection, B’nei Shaare Zion Chesed Fund was charged with sending the funds to Israel. The success of the event spurred plans for an even larger bowling tournament to be held in February, 2004. We pray that next year’s tournament will not have to be for the terror victims but rather for more pleasant causes.
