Cargo Couture: Get ready for some pocket change! B Y : J E N N I F E R C O H E N L ately, it seems as though designers are suffering from a mild case of split personality- first they tell us feminine and ladylike is the way to go for spring, then they launch a whole slew of rough and tough activewear! All diag- noses aside, we really can’t complain - after all, these cargo laden looks are the ultimate in casual cool: perfect for a day out on the town, sans looking too stuffy or put together. What we’re seeing now is pockets and pockets galore: cargo pockets, flap pockets, coin pockets, the list goes on. This com- partmental craze, spreading like wildfire, is afflicting skirts, jack- ets, and the like. Even belts have taken on a new function, incor- porating multi purpose pockets into their waist cinching abilities. That’s right, the hip pack is no longer a subject of ridicule! However, if you’re thinking this new utility chic look will free you of your shoulder bag, think again. Suddenly, hobos and messenger bags are sporting extra pocket space as well. This cargo trend has translated into an all around rugged, utilitarian look. Military style camouflage has once again gained notice, and grommets have begun adorning everything from jewery to belts. But whichever look suits your fancy, you can be sure you’ll have ample room for all your loose pocket change!
